  1. Iceland is windy and rainy - and erupty. We were quite well off with our fishing grounds when we started utilizing our abundant hydro-electrical potential. We also have exploited the geothermal potential where applicable, and our local electrical energy consumption is 100% renewable - with the exception of some remote areas that have standby diesel generators that step in when our crazy weather occasionally brings down the power lines. Iceland is a VERY sparsely populated country, with vast tracts of windy land where no one, not even birds, bother to live - prime land for windmills! This yet another resource that remains to be tapped, especially as hydroelectric power is perfect to balance the output variations inherent in wind energy.
