  1. "Step up" is probably the worst phrase she could have chosen here—it just comes across as entitled. No one is obligated to "step up" for anyone outside of their immediate family. The man should love the woman first and foremost, with her children coming second. Ideally, she should be his best friend, and both parents (her and him) should equally love her children, regardless of blood ties. That’s what makes a good stepfamily. The "up" part is irrelevant.
