Living in a city near a large body of water, like an ocean or lake, has always been expensive—that’s just the reality. People want to live in those areas, so the demand drives up rental prices. As long as the demand is there, prices will keep rising. However, there are more affordable options if you’re willing to look outside the city. For example, you could rent in Fergus for $1,500, New Hamburg for $1,800, or Woodstock for $1,600—all just over an hour’s drive from Toronto. Even closer, places like Brampton offer rentals for $1,600 to $2,000 and are only 20–30 minutes away. Affordable places do exist, but they’re not in Toronto proper. If the city is beyond your budget, it’s about finding a place that works within your means.
