I want to recommend Code Wars. It's a website that makes coding competitive but in the right way. It starts with a preamble with requirements, the languages you can choose from, and then your submitting solution is peer-reviewed by others. You can see which solutions are up-voted by the community as the best. Scores come from creativity, efficiency, beauty, and the like. It's an excellent resource. :)

I felt the same way back in the 90's. I wanted to learn how to program so I could make games for a living, but I never reconciled why I had to wade through dozens of useless, boring classes to get to what I wanted to learn. Conversely, schools that dedicated themselves to teaching how the program was prohibitively expensive. So I started teaching myself. I learned enough about basic HTML and Photoshop to get hired at a small web company in 1998. This year marks my 20th year as a professional web programmer and developer. School is useful for teaching you the basics, but once you learn those basics the rest is up to you. Granted computer science is hugely beneficial to programming languages but the real driver for your success is passion. Universities can never teach you passion. If you have passion you can learn just about anything online!

@programmingwithmosh Re: "School is useful for teaching you the basics." Apologies. To clarify, I meant K-12 public and private school. Not "higher" learning institutions. :)

@programmingwithmosh I see. So you're saying K-12 school is irrelevant as well? At least that's what it sounds like to me. I'm sure you agree K-12 education is good to have.

@programmingwithmosh K-12 is the United States designation for Kindergarten through 12th Grade
