  6. DON'T LISTEN TO JIM CRAMER!!!! He told people to buy Bear-Stearns seven weeks before they collapsed! Put your money in an index fund or a 5-star rated mutual fund. Ensure the fund has an expense ratio of between 0.5 to 0.75%. Less than 0.5% indicates the fund doesn't get much attention or is managed by one person instead of a team. More than 0.75% and you're paying more than you should every year. I recommend investing in funds that are Large Value or Large Growth. I also recommend diversifying your portfolio with a mix of funds, so if one or two sectors don't do too well, the other sectors in your portfolio can compensate. For example, health care, retail, technology/e-commerce, oil & gas, and the like.
