  1.  @noidea5984  Oh please, French revanchism was justified? Alsace-Lorraine was a majority German speaking area and they paid off the money in two years, after which they were left alone. Besides, Germans weren't salty over the Napoleonic Wars, France was being an obstacle to unification and opposed it.

  2.  @camm8642  Yes, this is how they arrived at the indemnity that France had to pay, namely by scaling up the indemnity Prussia paid back in 1807 (I believe?) according to the population size of France. Stating that the defeat in the Napoleonic Wars was a cause for the Franco-Prussian war is a different beast. Especially since Prussia would ultimately be one of the winners of the Napoleonic Wars. It would be fairer to say that the French public wanted to restore lost territories, so we would be back to French revanchism.

  4.  @camm8642  Yes, that is absolutely true and you won't see me denying this. For example, the German patriotic song "Die Wacht am Rhein" got written in the 1840 when France was again arguing for a Rhine border for itself and German nationalism very much sprang into being in opposition to the French occupation during the Napoleonic Wars. It's also true that Bismarck provoked the war, bceause he recognised that German unification had hit a road block in the form of France. Still, saying the Franco-Prussian war was caused by German revanchism is a bit silly. I'm sure if you dig deep into the source material you'll find people talking about it, but as far as causes go it'll rank on the bottom rungs.
