Eh, Germany won in WW1. Not that that is somehow going to help Ukraine.

The difference is that the Romans actually brought a living standard with them that Europe wouldn't achieve again for centuries after the fall of the empire.

@a.randomjack6661 Jesus Christ, I thought through context people would clue in that I meant that Germany beat Russia in WW1. 🙄

@Redbaron9495 Right, despite the food situation, the collapse of two governments and of course the melting away of the Russian army in between negotiations with the Germans. God, you guys sound like Americans trying to justify the failure in Afghanistan. "wELl, ACtuALly wE dIDn't LoOsE BecAUsE yOu SeE" It's been 106 years. Just accept historical fact and move on. There is no shame in admitting that Russia has also lost wars in her history.😒

Sort of raises the question of how it used to work before, between and following the world wars and what has changed since then. Without having studied the issue my immediate thought would be that having operated in a low threat environment for so long, in addition to societal changes, has led to a situation in which the defence industry has grown "fat with profit" for a lack of a more appropriate phrase.
2
@GLL-Ratnik Spare me your nonsense. Russia was defeated.
2
@jerromedrakejr9332 Yes, they withdrew from a conflict and signed a peace agreement, signing away a large swath of territory after it became apparent that the German army could push into the wreck of the Russian empire basically unopposed. That is the "withdrawal" from the war that you refuse to call a defeat.
2
@QuattroSG Can't speak for the Native Americans, but seeing as for example the Romano-Britons pleaded for the army to return in 410 I'd say they actually were fairly convinced of the benefits. (Ignoring that Britain was particularly hard hit by the collapse of the empire to the point that their society might have even regressed to below the level of pre-Roman Britain)

Calling everyone who fought the Russians in World War 2 a Nazi doesn't sit well with me * cough * Winter War * cough * Soviet invasion of Poland * cough * USSR being a totalitarian dictatorship responsible for millions of deaths before the war * cough *, but here in this case we are talking about a veteran of a Waffen-SS division. That should have never happened and every last person there deserves to be damned. I suppose it fits with the "appearance over substance approach" to this war where the West cares more about in the moment pictures, regardless of what they are actually doing and celebrating. "Is he a Ukrainian who fought for independence? Fantastic, let's honour him for easy (but also empty) support gestures. By the way, what is his service record?" "Dunno, who cares." The absolute state of Western politics.😒
1
@alexnderrrthewoke4479 Sure, and that's somehow not losing? Oh hey people, Germany didn't lose in WW1 to the western powers, they had a peace agreement!😒
1
@alexnderrrthewoke4479 For fuck's sake, just admit that Russia got knocked out of the war. There is no shame in it, it's been over a hundred years.
1
@craigrik2699 Sure, tell yourself that. It will probably help you get over the defeat in 1917. God Almighty, I didn't write the first comment to start a dick measuring contest.😒
1
@Redbaron9495 Yes, which is why Russia lost in WW1. Why is that even controversial?
1
@mykehog6646 Yes, I know? Russia losing WW1 has nothing to do with the current war in Ukraine, everyone who tries to draw conclusions from wars literally over 100 years in the past is a moron.
1
@colmcmillan173 Which Germany did in WW1. The society falling apart was due to the war. That Russia lost.🙄
1
Germany did defeat Russia in WW1. Not that it is going to help Ukraine.
1
@KondorDCS No? But that was hardly the point, my dear offended person.
1
@Gunni1972 No it doesn't, I simply matter of factly stated that Russia was defeated by Germany in WW1. It's been over 100 years, you'd think people would at some point stop wringing their hands over it. And yes, the Western Allies defeated Germany in turn and brought WW1 to an end (unless you count the many conflicts that stretched into the 20s). By the way, it wasn't called "New-Germany" either, but Finland, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic.

@PerceivedREALITY999 I'm flabbergasted. This must be the dumbest argument I've seen all year. It must really sting to acknowledge that Russia has lost a war in the past. Just wow, I'm not even arguing that it would help Ukraine in any way, shape or form. I'm just stating a historical fact.
1
@PerceivedREALITY999 You are illiterate, aren't you? I wrote that Germany defeated Russia in WW1, the First World War, the Great War, the one from 1914 to 1918. What's the point of bringing up the Nazis other than to soothe your bruised ego?
1
@PerceivedREALITY999 I shouldn't be surprised that you are a historical analphabet. The nazis didn't lose WW1, but Germany certainly defeated Russia in WW1.
1
@PerceivedREALITY999 I shouldn't be surprised that you are a historical analphabet. No, those people certainly did not lose WW1. Germany did however defeat Russia in WW1. It wasn't even close.
1
@PerceivedREALITY999 Yes, I agree, but they defeated Russia in WW1 in what was the sideshow of that war.
