  1. The difference is that the Romans actually brought a living standard with them that Europe wouldn't achieve again for centuries after the fall of the empire.

  2.  @QuattroSG  Can't speak for the Native Americans, but seeing as for example the Romano-Britons pleaded for the army to return in 410 I'd say they actually were fairly convinced of the benefits. (Ignoring that Britain was particularly hard hit by the collapse of the empire to the point that their society might have even regressed to below the level of pre-Roman Britain)
