The continued use of the spectre of World War 2 exasperates me more and more. It very clearly shows a lack of historical perspective where everything and everyone is World War 2 and Hitler, regardless of whether or not the comparison fits. I'm going to offer a different comparison, flawed as it is, because no two points in time are ever the same. It's the end of 1916 and the world is embroiled in World War 1. A peace proposal is being floated, but instead of seizing on it the Wilson administration doesn't do anything with the proposal. The forces in Germany that where trying to prevent unrestricted submarine warfare lost the internal struggle due to this inactivity and the USA (which was already bankrolling the Entente) entered the war in 1917. Ostensibly (after the Russians exited) to "make the world safe for democracy", just like we seemingly intend to do it again today. History taught us that the world was not made safe, as the resentment and the violence of the interwar period would give birth to the second World War. Instead of seeking peace total victory was sought and it just led to even more war. Even if we were to be victorious in Ukraine (or possibly because of that), we'd just head straight for a confrontation with China. Just like I'm sure that failure in Ukraine will make the US even more determined to "protect" Taiwan.
