Fortunately Zelensky is in the driver's seat as far as when negotiations start. This video seems to suggest we remove sanctions when the war has a negotiated peace. That should be driven by common sense. You had the same thing in 2014 & yet Russia (which was still under some sanctions) invade again 8 years later. Rather than set condition like 'end the war'. Would it not be better to lift sanctions when the desire to invade again is gone? Russia invading neighbors every 8 years wouldn't be desirable to anyone. It would be great to lift all sanctions tomorrow if there is peace, change of regime (not just Putin's cronies), surrender of war criminals, and Ukraine may have some conditions they want met. I don't want to see Russia beat into the ground with war reparations & the like. But we have to use some common sense in ending it in a way that it won't happen again for a long time.

@annnee6818 There should be, Ann. But Russia won't be able to pay such a sum. And we do want them to come back into the community of nations once they make some 'changes'. Like WW1 Germany, reparations will only serve to bring a more intense enemy back later. If the 85 (or so) oblasts, krais, and other federal districts start to splinter into separate nations, there will be no telling who to levy reparations against. All the Western investment that was in Russia will go into Ukraine. So Ukraine can look forward to not being an economic back water now.
