  1. A few of us that watched russia's performance in Chechnya in the mid 90's then again in the late 90's. Then South Ossetia in 2008 were not too surprised when russia did poorly in 2022. I personally had a sick feeling in my stomach that russia would do much better after Feb 24. Even though my head thought Ukraine would do well I never dreamed this well of course. It's funny . . . All the indicators were there but I still thought russia would 'roll' somewhat & the west would lose interests like in 2014. I had been a few times between the Chechnyan wars. And the sentiment in russia was seething towards Chechnya. In 1999 they were absolutely convinced they had been attacked in the Moscow apartment bombings. No one suspected it had been putin in his accession to power. This was at a time when free speech was very much a thing in russia.
