  1. The US discovered they depended too much on the Middle East for oil a long time ago. It is an easy trap to fall into. If you can't supply your own energy resources, at least diversify the sources you do get them from. Domestic coal, Nuclear, LNG from the US, Gas from Russia, etc. Be able & willing to go without them in times like these. Also diversify heating appliances as well. Not all gas, coal fired, electric.
