Losing all instrument for a few seconds would not cause the plane to drop. Now if the electronics controlling the flight surfaces told the plane to go into a nose down attitude that could be. Which would not put passengers on the ceiling. I think some of the story wasn't recounted right. A violent thermal can pin people to the ceiling but at just the same time the instruments go out? I think the instruments went out, the plane went slightly nose up then nose over suddenly. It is called the arc of weightlessness & will pin people to the ceiling. The only thing that makes any sense. 'Out of trim' when the autopilot disengages wouldn't be severe enough. Just have to wait for the investigation.
