The russians always have had a pompous attitude to their own importance on the world stage. But at the same time always been a little self-aware that it may not actually be true. I think this combination of super inflated ego mixed the insecurity has made them neurotic as a country. Your 'turn of phase' might actually be true.

@pierohermadones1877 Pride in your country is pretty empty if all you do is go around & attack your much weaker neighbors. I have to agree with what you say.

Unfortunately even when sanctions hit hard, Orclandia could still continue on. I don't think they will. But with a unity of purpose any country could continue under war emergency measures. When the video said 'by summer' I think this is accurate. I think the 'unity of purpose' will quickly fade & there will be many actively looking to change the government. But don't undersell the russian ability to suffer, at least not yet. It will come in time & until then . . . Well there is always the barter system when it takes a cart load of rubles just to buy a few potatoes.

The sanctions can be lifted pretty quickly in fact. If the RF stays in one peace monitoring of public sentiment needs to be in place. And lifting could take a very long time. But to say never is to punish them endlessly? Did we do that to NAZI Germany or Japan? In fact if russian stays whole there will be those outside wanting to get back to business as usual quickly. Now if russia breaks up, we have no sanctions against a new country of say Astrakhan/Tatarstan or Primorsky/Khabarovsk. What you propose would be to slap sanctions on these new countries as they form? Punish them for breaking away from russia in other words?
