  1. I'm a frustrated naval architect. The Southern Seas are so rough because there is no land break anywhere around the world to moderate the winds. So it can go completely around the world with nothing to stop it. This is a massive 'fetch'. Like 'Cape Town Rollers' just off of South Africa. Ships ideally are build for this but it can't be done all the time. Many ships have had their backs broken in the Southern Seas. What is a hurricane in other places is just another Tuesday there.
