He was like most leaders in Russia & very paranoid. To a crippling degree when things didn't go his way. Those that should know (that survived his purges) said he would almost get into a corner & rail against those forces against him. Stalin did have had a physiological excuse. He was a victim of Fetal Alcohol Effect/Syndrome. His mother drank heavily during pregnancy. And these aren't just speculation. An embryo under stress like that form physical characteristics after birth. There are children that become functioning members of society IF the mother didn't get drunk at certain stages of pregnancy. It is almost a certainty that Stalin was a severe case & literally couldn't help being the way he was. I doubt that Putin has any such excuse, but who knows?
