I bought after 3 years of living in the uk. I had to have 10% deposit around 35k had to pay 1500 for lawyer had to pay 999 for the morg and did a 2 year morg so had to pay 999 then did a 5 year morg. My house was 345k I don’t find the weather too bad here but I came from Singapore where it was hot all the time. So nice to have hot and cold. Don’t find it too expensive compared to Singapore. We go to Japan every 1 to 2 years as that’s where we’re from. I would say if you are going to move to the uk make sure you are a skilled worker, work in banking, finance, law, dr. Anything else not worth it. I don’t think the uk is that bad but I have lived in countries that I had a much worse life. I earn a good salary here too. There is a lot of crime in the uk but you don’t see it that much unless you are into drugs or something. I read about it but never seen it and I work in London. Go on the train to London and don’t see any issues. Other than the news. I think many British people blame everyone for their issues and that’s why they are doing bad. Japan has little to no benefits, people work. In Japan people starve to death if they don’t work. In the uk people on benefits are large. In Japan if you can’t pay your rent your homeless in the uk there are housing benefits for eu people and British people and asylum seekers. If your on a visa yep it could be a struggle but these days you cannot be on minimum wage on a visa. I think you need to earn 37k now to get a visa.

@ I am on well over 80k as I said I would not move to the uk unless your in law, computing, finance and accounting. The cost of living is ok in the uk as I came from Singapore. Where it’s far more expensive. The only thing I find expensive in the uk is train fares

The thing is this is everywhere I lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan , oz and nz and the USA and it’s the same no where is any different

@lifestylebypete if you ever get the chance to go to Singapore or Hong Kong or the USA you will see why I’m happy with the prices here. Also I think you probably compare the prices in the eu counties with the pound when you earn the local currency you probably won’t think the eu is cheap also. Issue is inflation everywhere is high. I went to Bulgaria and Italy recently and yep Bulgaria is cheap in Sofia, but it can also be just as expensive as the uk I found a craft beer place and a burger shop that was just as expensive as anywhere in the uk. But then I found bars that were half the price of Wetherspoon. But when I found out what coworkers earn there I’m like how can you afford this. I guess only good thing there is the house price. Some paid 5k or so for a house. Italy too was crazy prices. Really cannot see how locals afford it the same as Spain I can see why they want to kick out all the tourists.

@ the thing is I do a lot of the people around me rent etc the person accords the road from me is a pensioner in his 70s never bought he pays 1300 for his rent I pay 1100 for my morg. I always ask him why he did not buy. He did not think about it was his response. I look at the last time my home was sold it was 50k when I bought it it was 345. You think because I was able to buy and I earn a decent salary I don’t see poverty. I’m comparing it to Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the USA all places I have lived and the uk is not as poor as the poorest people in this countries. Yep all the crime I see is due to poverty which leads people to drugs. A lot of the people around where I live smoke drugs daily you smell it in the street they all say they are poor. Yet can afford drugs. I don’t live in a mega rich area as you can tell by my house price in zone 6 but I was able to buy.

@ you also cannot move your the uk anymore on a visa if you earn less than 37k so not sure anyone coming in now will ever be on as low as 30k unless they come in illegally or aslyum. So cannot really compare to the old days of the uk when you could get a visa on 18k I guess also from my time being in the uk 30k in London is probably not good but 30k up north will be a massive salary from what my neighbours say.

@ why are the people who live in these towns also. I think a lot of the uk issues stem from up bringing. Starts from school. I went to school in Japan. You clean the floors, you serve your own food, both my kids go to local school so we go school with the same kids who rent vs the people who own. My kids do well as we can help. The parents who cannot don’t help. My son is friends with many of the kids who are not doing well and wants to help them. Issue I see is when the parents are on benefits the grand parents were and then their kids will be that probably needs to change in the uk. You can see what jobs pay the best salaries in the uk via LinkedIn etc. when my kids go to uni they will have the pay the international fee, uk and eu people will have that as student loans so my high salary won’t help them as much as local students in the same houses as me they will have a better chance if they take it. I do fear for the mentality of people in the uk. I do think the uk would be good to pay for people to go to places like Japan, USA etc so see what it’s like when you have no safety net and still see if the life is as bad as people make it out here.

@ I am 40 now and as I said no where is any different you earn a pound and spend a pound here. When you earn the local currency it’s always going to be expensive. If you earn a pound and go to these countries you will find it cheap. Inflation across the world is so high. Most countries import everything these days from china so it’s the same everywhere bar the taxes.
