Such a shame. In England the war is taught as a world war. We learn it all. There is a tendancy to forget about China too much. It's often dismissed as a civil war with added Japan. but it's still taught in passing. I often wonder how much better America might manage if it's people knew more about the world that wasn't just about how it effects America. I've been over a few times and met amazing and lovely people. But it's astonishing how little that said people know about the world :(

I'm not sure where you get the lack of pitched battles from. Most of the country of Poland was a battlefield. Northern france had huge battles take place. The low countries commited their entire forces and Norway held out against incredible odds. Not to mention the huge battles happening in China. And that's not even a year into the war!

A small note on the strict "follow the orders to the letter" busines. It wasn't an acceptable defence for the German Generals at Nuremberg. It would not be a acceptable defence here. The French Admiral was a flag officer. If his superiors had said "line up 1300 of your sailors and have them all shot". Should he do so? Because in effect that's what he made sure happened. He should have been court martialed for gross dereliction of duty and gross misconduct. History is full of tragic events. This has to be one of the worse, most unnecessary and most senseless events of the 20th century.

richard smith it may depend on the classes. It was covered in my A-Level History :)

@TheBruceGday couldn't agree more. I don't follow the news much now. That's sad to say as I was once very interested in politics. But I have seen that in the last week, some young person who's famous for being on Instagram (I'm 32 and I'm not sure what the hell that means!)... Was on a TV show saying children shouldn't be taught about ww2 as it might impact their mental health!!! It's the most disturbing thing I've ever heard. That fact that his "thoughts(I'd be shocked if this person had ever managed thoughtS plural)" were deemed by some as worth listening to, and repeating! Is terrifying. Before we know it, we'll have far right groups elected to power and kids will suggest solving problems with nukes, gas and biological warfare "after all. Nobody has ever used them. Maybe we should be first".... Sighs.

richard smith I would expect that that would depend on the individual teacher.

Juan Sanchez then why were the defendants given such a rigorous defence? Also, why were so many acquitted of some or all accounts? It wasn’t a junta. It was a fair trial of some of the worse human beings to ever walk this earth.
