Chandler white. I don't think you should be claiming the men in service in the USN/USA/USAAC were bored or apathetic on December 7th. They knew war was coming. Nobody had allusions. In fact war had come and was soon to enter it's 3rd year. The attack was a surprise attack. By definition it was not expected in the way it happened. Why it was a surprise will be debated for decades if not centuries to come. But it was not due to apethy or lazyness. The same Americans who volunteered for the eagle squadron to fight in 1939/40. Were the same Americans who played cat and mouse in the Atlantic in 1940. The same Americans who went to Canada in1940 to enlist to help fight. The same Americans who knew in 1941 that war was coming and wanted to be prepared and so joined the navy, army and enlisted in air training programs. And the same Americans who joined up on December 8th and every day after. You yanks have a lot to be proud of. It's so so sad that seemingly most Americans now and going back 50+ years (I've read a lot of history books, some published as early as 48)... Have a habit of seeing PH as a day that separated black from white. It may be a day that will live in infamy. But in reality it was just another battle. A short one that was fought bravely. It had a big impact politically and in a theatre strstigic sense in the short term. But it was only a tiny part of a huge war. Thinking Americans before this battle were any different to thoes after is a poor way to think of thoes Americans who were to fight and die before December 41.

@jonathanbrown7250 due to the uslesnss of American torpedoes from the start of the Pacific war, the American subs accomplished very little in 42/43. Drach has covered this on this channel a few times. It's an amazing story. So even if 90% of the us sub fleet was sunk across the whole Pacific on Dec 7th. The result would have been next to sod all The us subs accomplished great things later in the war and were vital to victory.... Once their torpedoes actually worked. One thing I often wondered. Had America joined ww2 at the start. They could have began realising their torpedoes didn't work against German/Italian targets in 1939/40/41. Meaning when the war in the Pacific against Japan kicked of, the pac fleet boats would have went into action in 42/43 with working torpedoes. And got the same success they did in 44/45.

This is exactly what I thought. And made me chuckle for so many sad reasona

One of Stephen Ambrose best quotes is that the men of ww2 were part of the WE generation. True of his citizen GIs and all thoes in my grandads generation in England (born 1926) he always talks of "we".... "We just got on with it". "We'll manage lad". Always think of Ambrose quote when thinking of these amazing people.

Taranto and PH have been compared across the decades. But it's hardly a fair comparison. The size of the attacking force. The means of attack. And the time of attack are all very different. Also the Italians were at war and knew the rn had carriers. The rn was at war. Knew the Italians knew they had carriers and of course didn't care lol. The USA was still not technically at war in either Ocean. Yes the war has been raging from 39, through 40 and now to the end of 41. But there is very little reason for 99.9% of us personal to expect an attack on the morning of the 7th any more than they did the morning of the 6th. The .1% is arguable. A comparison video would be really interesting. Especially to see the Italian response Vs the American response in terms of salvage. But I daresay most keyboard historians will forget that one case involved 2 navy's who'd been at war for some time in a compact thatre And the other was two nations at peace in the world's largest ocean

This is one of my huge bug bears. Case in point to anyone wanting to argue X way of saying something over y..... Please say "Birmingham" out loud. Was it said as a native of Birmingham? If so then was it the one in Alabama, the one in the English Midlands or one elsewhere? Or if not said as a native. Did you say it as most would in your country? Because as an Englishman I can tell you. 90% of the country does not say Birmingham as would someone living in/coming from Birmingham. That is Birmingham in England. Of course we don't say it how a native of Birmingham Alabama would. And would a native of Washington state, new England, California or Florida say Birmingham how natives of Birmingham say it? If so. Natives of which Birmingham. In short. We live in the age of the internet and international communication. If the speaker communicates that which they intend. What is the benefits of arguing linguistic nuances? Especially when this is largely done over the internet using the written and not spoken word!

That was the point ;)

For those who complain about pronunciations. Please say "Birmingham" out loud. Was it said as a native of Birmingham? What is the benefits of arguing linguistic nuances? Especially when this is largely done over the internet using the written and not spoken word! Drach spent 10 seconds explaining how to say a word. He wrote a script and agonised over this. As he has many Ernest attempts to say names in a way to appeal to the masses. How much more could we learn if such nonsense was left in the past.

Joke being this is the quickest sequel he's managed (justifiably!)
