Very common in the west. Especially when discussing history. I'm English and I would always say Constantinople. Just a historical hangover.

In the grand scheme of things. The outcome of the war wouldn't change. Germany had shortages of a lot of other reasources. Their home front issues were not just down to oil. Also The allied bombing campaigns didn't focus on oil properly until well after the tables had turned on the Germans. Add to this that an oil industry in Germany would be fairly easy to bomb (ploesti was a pain of a mission for the majority of the war). The main thing that would happen differently that may impact the war in a significant way, is that Hitler probably wouldn't have had his split personality syndrome on the southern front in Russia. He could have forgotten about diverting assets from Stalingrad and the Volga front to try and take the Caucasus oil fields and focused on Stalingrad etc. Stalingrad is always hailed as a turning point. Take that victory away from stalin and maybe the war in the east drags on another year+ but the Russian industrial complex had kicked into gear by then. so would it win Hitler the war.? Doubtful. Interesting counter history mind

Was there much of a French airforce at this point of the war? A few free french pilots in England... And a very token force in French north Africa? Not sure legendary is the right word for such a force?
