You could argue that cinema, TV or toothpaste did the same. It can't be proven that was the only cause of the huge changes in society we have seen

I entered this comment thread to make the exact points time ghost did. As an added note. The 60% of people who aren't American that watch this. Largely have as little interest in understanding the way American laws are made, as Americans have interest in how laws are made in other countries. NB. I studied American government and politics as part of my A:Level College course in the UK. So I'm probably not the best advocate of my point. BUT it still stands. If a person from xyz were watching this to learn of WORLD historical events. They'd soon wonder why on earth there was a Segway into American law making that wasn't relevent to the content.

@kraanz about to be my point. Lol. Though yes there was a different naming culture then which may be what the op meant. I wonder what proabition would have been like if they'd outlawed a different drug. Caffeine say? Would the Mafia have set themselves up selling bootleg coffee 😂

I was a nurse. We had plenty of controlled drugs that would have a street value. Can't imagine it was any different. As for medical alcohol not being drinkable. I've met a few alcoholics who would disagree! Lol apparently if you put alcohol swabs in a carton of NHS orange juice, it tastes quite nice 😳

@Veylon I really can't work that one out. I've been a keen historian for 20 years. I'm English and voted in the referendum. I've read widely on the 1880-1950 era. I can't work out how proabition can be compared to the British vote to leave the EU...

Do you have a source for this?

Only so much time in each episode sadly. As they've mentioned as well, they struggle with prime sources for languages they don't speak.

Thomas Malthus would probably have a fit if he saw the population now (and the rate it's increasing)

We have that already. It's called "the news" lol

My grandad is 93 and still calls it the wireless. I didn't think much of it, until my mate pointed out the other day, that I still call my laptop a PC...

Doesn't mean it wasn't the right thing to do.

Epidemic is a interesting choice of word. I agree on your initial sentiment. But who's to say that divorce and single parents are occourances to be considered negative and infectious? If a child is well cared for and brought up with positive social values. Then does it matter? Will future generations care or just consider it normal?

Or it fatherless children and lack of marriage has been caused by TV. There were huge social changes from the end of ww1 to today. Which is the whole point of this episode. Blaming a lack of traditional families on universal sufferage is incredibly short sighted. As a further note... Why do we look on it as a bad thing? I mean. Assume over population doesn't destroy the human race in a couple of generations... Can you imagine what our great great grandchildren will make of our beliefs? For all we know, the norm could be single parents both male and female and the idea of a contract binding parents together for life will be utterly alien to them. Or at least a leftover tradition amount "minor" religions like Catholics and such (assuming the decline in world religion continues, it'll probably be a foreign Concept in many places). As a side note. My sex ed teacher said something really funny in school (talking 15 years ago now). Lads you should use condoms every chance you get... If you get the chance!

Your quote is a little off. It was date not day and seven, not seventh. The Americanism of saying 7 not 7th always sounds so odd to me 🤔

In Britain we have something similar (though now only for TV). It's called the TV licence and is a form of tax which pays for the BBC as well as other things.

I must read about TM. I wonder if his ideas were any better than thanos. I mean. What was thanos thinking. The population would only skyrocket again after 1/2 of all life dissapears. Excellent movies. Annoying plot hole. Controlling the rate of reproduction seems the only logical answer 🤔
