Random point(s) from a car guy. In England we use "Merc". But it's not a pronunciation. It's an abbreviation. We say it just to make it quicker/easy to say. Just like a Jaguar is a "Jag".* A note on VW. The 3rd Reich sold tokens to it's citizens. The idea being that once enough tokens were bought, that the family was then on a list to get a car for the people which was very very cheap. This car was of course the VW beetle. In reality very few people actually saw a VW let alone owned one. Of course all the peoples money was spent on armaments. As a cultural note. None of these other than Porsche are considered "Premium" in the UK. My American friends have confirmed that this is basically because of the poor quality of American made cars (especially in the 70s/80s) *oddly it isn't unusual for BMW to be lengethed to "Beemer" as in Bee (the insect) and mer (the biblical gift/eleven reference). This 'word' has more letters than BMW but is usually quicker to say, especially in some accents.
