The people in the comments don't seem to be picking up on this, but social mores in 1959 did not account for a woman who cross dressed like a man, and acted like a man. You can see when the camera sweeps over her person, that she is sitting as a man would. In 1959, women wore circle skirts. It wasn't until the late 60's that women BEGAN wearing pants, and not in school, either. Note her "greaser" man's hairstyle. She smirks when the interviewer brings up anything involving the shock value of what she is doing. Of course, these are superficial, divorces in that time were unheard of, she married men she married the same day, men she married within a couple of weeks, then the illegal checks, drug charges, and more.
