  1. Dan, I have to tell you, illicit income has ALWAYS needed to be reported to the IRS. The only thing new is the form. Drug dealers have needed to report income all along. They have been more at risk of being caught by the IRS than the DEA by not reporting income!

  2. Here in northern Maine, it's not unusual at all to lose power for a week, it happens a few times a year. Actually Maine was at the top of the list for power outages for all 50 states for a few years running. We never have rolling blackouts, either, it's a solid no power until it finally comes back on. We lost power for 3 weeks a few years back. It's very difficult here with extreme cold, to 45 below zero F and 8 month winters. I had to laugh and just shake my head at all the attention Texas got at their "big freeze". Nobody pays any attention to Maine's power outages.

  3. My credit union closed for AN ENTIRE WEEK (last week). I had to drive 10 miles to another location, that I didn't even know existed. I unloaded the funds - which caused them to lock up the account, who cares, right? I dumped the money out of there. Banks all over the place are doing this!! Be aware of banks either closing and limiting hours, and of this possible bail in problem.

  4. I really like your breakdown of goals plan. People now (millenials/gen z) were awarded for doing nothing throughout their whole lives, trophy generations, so they have no idea how to achieve anything. I worked with a young girl who expected a promotion after 2 months - for doing nothing exemplary. She really did. This was my first experience with millenials. I tried to tell her how she needed to work hard, check off some goals within the department, she wasn't into it. She transferred into another department instead - where she also would not promote - lol. But apparently it felt like a promotion to her lol

  5. Dan, I am a landlord. 3 months ago I had an out of state tenant - a nurse. She paid each month with an out of state check - from the state next door to us, from a partnering bank! I use a credit union by the way. They held the check each month for THREE WEEKS. I talked to the bank manager and she called the other bank to supposidly get clearance and they refused to authorize whether there was enough in the account, blah blah. So even now, my bank (credit union) holds out of state checks for THREE WEEKS. Even from "partner banks". Sounds like a scam just to hold the money longer to me. My response is to accept cash only for new tenants, and then I use Erent.

  7. That is true, my mother secretly kept one when I was a little girl. I went with her to the bank having no idea what it actually was at the time, as we would make the weekly trip through the bank for the Christmas Club. Christmas sure was great as a kid! Edit: this was during the oil crisis of the 70's so things were really tight for them. I had no idea whatsoever.

  8. Good for you for doing that, but I agree it's ridiculous. My new practice is not carrying my cell phone anywhere, so they'd have been out of luck. My veterinary clinic thinks they are very clever and wants everyone to call them from outside (in their very own parking lot) screw them. I don't have my phone with me.

  9. Auto repair places are spending all their time sourcing parts right now. They are on the phone for hours. I went in and stood there at my appointment time, and waited almost an hour for an inspection sticker, as he waited on hold inquiring about parts for another person. As he got off the phone in frustration, he said this was his life now. If you want to get your car fixed quickly, source and bring your parts with you. Get them at a salvage yard (online). Ebay. Anywhere, but don't think your auto repair guy has time to do it.

Remember on Trailer Park Boys when Ricky steals the ATM - he does it twice, but the best time was when he chains it to the truck and yanks it right through the side of the building and pulls it right down the road :D It was my favorite part in the whole series!!!! Hysterical! Anyway, it's time to start stopping crime ourselves as civilians. Enough is enough. I'm armed for a reason.

  19. I heard a while back about this type of thing happening at Paypal. It had to do with, for example, a Canadian making USD (selling to Americans) the example I know of was book sales, and they wouldn't release $43k. Had something to do with them deciding the Canadian didn't have some type proof on file in Paypal's system of whatever they required for proof of address or something like that. It was very vague and seemed completely false on Paypal's part. Sounded like they just wanted to hold the money.

  22. There is a way to leverage your bank at your own risk. Take out a personal loan. Don't go wild with the loan. Pay the minimum. This is an offset against your savings, in case they take it. Just don't spend the loaned money, then you aren't leveraged any more, you're in debt. You could, in theory, do this with a heloc, but it's big money, and too tempting of a debt risk for most. Edit: If I saw anything crazy like "health fee" on my restaurant bill, I would have no problem deducting that quickly and easily FROM THE TIP.

  24. The last think I would want to listen to is someone's loud bikes and cars in ANY house. Edit, I had a good laugh over the laundromat. Laundromats launder money as a cash business. Although they are becoming more digitized. Good investment for 110k/8k a month, with the rental machines. The machines are rentals, because I recently looked into getting them for my apartment building. But I wanted to just buy them and be done with it, but you CANT. Big runaround.

When I originally opened my business account, I had to go into a private office at the bank where I'd already prepared my EIN, explain my business. Recently I got a call from the bank manager who went over it with me again, asking much more particular questions under the guise that she and her husband may want to do what I am doing... right.

  27. Government is so desperate for electric cars when they suck. Here in Northern Maine, where have 5 hours of sunlight in the winter, they installed a field of solar panels, which are covered by 15 feet of snow 8 months of the year. We shake our heads.

I have a business account and my bank holds out of state checks - the example I am giving is for a check from their own parner bank - for THREE WEEKS. I have had the account for 25 years. No overdrawing issue. They can just electronically transfer the money, they can call and verify the balance of the other party. No excuse for this.

  35. I worked for Citi. Same thing with the monthly quotas. Meeting with the whiteboard with everyone in the departments name up there with how many accounts they opened versus the goal... branch manager tries to get everyone up to goal. Last night of the month everyone is there late trying to get the goal. I wouldn't be surprised if they are closing accounts just so they can make goals again by having to open them.

  40.  @dalesmith4019  It's interesting that people believe stores have this "insurance" against losses. They "self insure" is all. They have to write off the losses. There is no insurance company to cover losses! Just use your head for a minute and think about it. Who would Walmart use for "losses"? The largest retailer that has enormous losses? Who is an insurance company big enough to cover it? Do you believe Walmart pays PREMIUMS for this? No, insurance companies never pay for known losses that are guaranteed to happen. Insurance companies do ALL THEY CAN to get out of paying out!

  44. Of course, banks could have the company come and load the machine more times per day. So that the limit would not have to be $500. (not $5000 as you said). I believe this actually has more to do with liability. Banks and Visa/MC do not want to be responsible for thefts, should your card be stolen, less funds have been taken, only up to $500 per day.
