  4. Here is how it worked. In the 1970's, we went off the gold standard. This meant that the US budget up to that time, had to match dollar for dollar, real gold. After the US went off the gold standard, the budget got more elastic. They could simply print more money... no backing of gold. They couldn't do that when there was a gold backed dollar.
