It would be interesting to see if this played out in the small tribal groups and towns that existed for the vast majority of human history or if this is purely a modern adaptation to modern life. Because if this was done in a small tribal unit, it would absolutely destroy family bonds and risk death for the whole group. Perhaps thats why women had their power taken from them by the patriarchy? But still I would like to see some sort of study on that.

@EKILIBRIUM_official The Romans actually had this happen three times. Once during the Republic, once during the early Empire and then again during the late empire in the 4th century. Each time they gave women to right to inherit property.

@EKILIBRIUM_official Each time they gave women the right to inherit property? It generally happened after a massive Roman defeat. That meant that a crap ton of men died. And families needed their wealth to be secured. So if you are a Roman man, but all your sons are minors and cannot inherit property, you would want to the law to state that your wife can have it so she can raise your sons to be good and proper Roman men. But we know that doesnt happen. And it led to the predictable things that happen today, even back then.

@EKILIBRIUM_official Well considering the first instance was before Caesars Gallic wars and the Francs were in what today is Poland, I would say no, neither of those groups that had an involvement. At least the first time. That was all King Pyrrhus's doing.

@stevenscott2136 it did. Your memory is correct. And those that inherited stopped getting remarried and making children. Then the Roman's came.
