I disagree with your general argument, respectfully. But for different reasons. In the US the Supreme Court has affirmed the term "fighting words". Through multiple cases, going back to the 40s, in unanimous court rulings, any language that meets the terms fighting words can be responded to with physical violence. I do agree with your statement on the spread of what is deemed insulting. But people know when they are being insulting. Women do it all the time, because they think the social politeness of society will give them protection. Context matters. Men are never under that pretense. Mens social interactions are always with the subtle message of be respectful or violence can break out. The larger issue with modern society is the refusal for violence to occur when it should. And sometimes violence is appropriate. If we did, people would be much more polite. I am a firm believer in the connection between zero tolerance policies started in schools in the 80s and the inability of people to be socially respectful to each other. I am not bald. But if my supervisor called me a balled see you next tuesday, I would have broke his jaw. Then I would have sued the company for wrongful termination and a hostile work environment. You dont get a better world from backing down from threats, you have to neutralize them. You can do that with violence or with law. Right now we are doing it with shaming. That is the problem.
