I am not a fan of the States use of law enforcement. That said, this seems like an unfortunate, but legit use of deadly force. The truth probably is that this man had a record and just did not want to go back to prison for having a stolen car.

@drestnar respectfully, California is the way it is because of reasoning like yours. If all a person has to do to avoid legal ramifications is resist, how long until there is zero order? The guy was out of his car before the leo even exited his vehicle. That said, before the leo even left his vehicle he should have called for backup. But lets not forget what caused this, someone breaking the law. Should that be a death sentence, no, but thats where the subject took it to. But lets not pretend this was a guy minding his own business who didnt do nothing.

@dilipanthonypinto1620 ok lets say the officer shoots the guy in the leg or the gut (still can be fatal and bleed out quick), then the suspect deploys the officers taser, incapacitation the officer and taking his firearm. What does the suspect do next? The officers use of force, while unfortunate, was completely justified in this situation. I am not even a fan of law enforcement. I do carry though, if anyone touches any weapon I have, without my authorization, they are a lethal threat. And I would treat them accordingly. If anything this officer waited to long. People need to understand that if an officer is using his taser then he/she is not trying to kill you. If you touch that weapon platform, you become a lethal threat to that officer. But thats not what this was. This man was in possession of stolen property at best, at worst he was a car thief, eventually the whole story will come out. We should treat car thieves like we did horse thieves in the 19th century.

@fizzmoe9846 The only flaw with your logic is the law enforcement officer had legal authority to do a stop. Once that happens, by your agreement in obtaining your drivers license, you have a legal obligation to follow the leos instructions. If he didnt have a license then the officer had legal authority to arrest him. This man refused that and then attempted to disarm the leo. I am not a fan of law enforcement or the states current use of it. That said, episodes like these, and people like you who try to excuse this type of behavior make a lot of people auto default to the states position. If you grab another persons weapon, and a taser is a weapon, it becomes a lethal struggle. I would have shot the man as soon as he grabbed the taser the first time.

@imcorrectyourwrong5132 if I have you at taser point or gun point, it wont be because I am mad. It will because I feel threatened or my life, families lives or property is at risk. If you touch any weapon platform in my possession I will discharge my weapon. Attempting to grab someones weapon is a lethal threat. That said, im not pro cops executing people. I am not pro going to look for dragons to slay. We have courts for that. I think this cop made tons of mistakes during this stop, I do think that the discharging of his firearm wasnt one of them, though I am willing to concede, his mistakes may have contributed to the ultimate outcome. But the suspect/victim was totally at fault here. If he stayed in his vehicle he would have just been arrested.

I dont think we are at a point where the majority of Americans can have a rational discussion about these kind of things anymore. Yours is a logical thought, but people are hyper emotional these days.

@mistermann7779 there is a debate to be had here. This subject had the officers taser, attempting to withdraw, in this case at least, at that point would have created a greater danger. But in general, we really should have a discussion on what a community wants its law enforcement to do. No knocks are a great subject, why dont law enforcement just wait until the subject leaves the house and arrest him/ her then.

@alwayzhope4ever I mean I understand these types of things are generally just a rage vent system that people do. But the core of his statement was true, there is a discussion to be had here. Unfortunately it wont be had. People will just throw stones at each other. The saddest part of that is that on a lot of things most people will agree with each other. But they just look at the differences. Thank you for your post. Its always nice to hear a kind word.

@imcorrectyourwrong5132 @ 1:05 you can see the officer put his hand on top of the taser in the suspect/victims right hand. I am not sure you can see that on a small cell phone, but on a 60 inch tv its very clear. It will be argued that the man who was shot was attempting to move the taser to a position, which he might have been able to use the weapon on the officer.

one on one altercations very rarely end well. It would be nice if we could go back to two officers per car, but we simply cannot afford that. If two officers would have been there, this man would more than likely would have still be alive.

@angels22faz I would disagree with your statement. Our law enforcement is like this because the state (the regulating government authority) plays with laws. Look whats going on in California. The guy who shot up old Sac is out on bail. Thats a political choice. Political choices have consequences. The state then uses that as an excuse to ratchet up and militarize law enforcement. Our law enforcement is like it is now, because thats the way the state wants it. In this case it looks like, from my perspective that this was a legit shooting. But that doesnt mean law enforcement is always the good guy. It really depends on the department and the policies it has.

@Andy123AE The officers probably should have called for backup before exiting his vehicle considering the subject was already out of his. The cop, I am going to guess thought he could de escalate the situation by his authority. That works when there are multiple officers, not always the case when there is only one. This officer made a lot of mistakes in this case, including closing to make bodily contact without even knowing if another person was in the vehicle. One of the things I find odd about the video is the subject never utters a word. The whole time. Even when the officer attempts to taser him, completely silent. Thats not normal. I will be interested to see what the autopsy says.

@jamiebarnes4804 Its dangerous for anyone they contact too, leo may have to use more force than they otherwise would have to if a person thinks they can overpower or just physically resist a single officer. But today, understanding simply psychology makes you a boot licker is some peoples eyes. Like me, I am generally against most of the laws that make the modern police officer an overtly oppressive tool of the state, but I can still see the necessity of a police force, it just needs to be controlled more.

he, the suspect/victim, has it in his right hand @ 1:05. might be hard to see on a cell phone screen. @ 1:06 the officer puts his hand on top of the taser and the suspect/victim pulls it away. the officer goes to a full choke hold then deploys his firearm.

Tasers can be used after they have been fired. You simply press the non fireable prongs on the front of the taser into your target. The fact that you dont know that shows that you do not understand the tactical situation at the moment the officer fired. You can see @ 1:05 in the video where the officer places his left hand on the taser in the mans right hang. The man then moves his right hand away, with the taser in it, this is when the officer draws his firearm. Did the officer make mistakes in this stop, yes. But at that moment, he made the only logical choice he had. If you make a choice to take another persons weapon, and a taser is a weapon, lethal force isnt unreasonable. The only way this could be any type of murder is if the officer did not have legal authority to make this stop. And he did have legal authority to make the stop.

@batsonelectronics You are projecting a bit here. Every cop does not want to get into an altercation, though some do. I imagine those encounters have made you pre judge all law enforcement, thats your choice. If someone came at me with a taser, and I was armed, and they knew I was armed, I would shoot them. If they incapacitate me with the taser, they then have access to my firearm. I am guessing you dont carry. And thats probably a good thing. I'll concede the cop made a lot of mistakes. That said, none of this would have happened if the victim/suspect had did what he was legally obligated to do. That in itself does not entitle the leo to be able to kill him though. He had the cops taser, its @ 1:05 in the video. All he had to do is touch the cops arm with it and pull the trigger, fight over. The cop knew this since he was trained, as you pointed out. If I may ask, seriously, where did you receive your weapons training? Or is this coming from strictly politicized thinking? Either way I wont hate on you for it. I love freedom, people should be able to hold whatever position they want. But I would hope they would do it on unbiased info and actual experience, and yes i know that is a bit naive.

@batsonelectronics well from a tactical standpoint pepper spray that close would harm the officer as well. The situation is unchanged. Except both the officer and subject are now chemically blinded and their breathing is effected. I didnt go political about it. I asked a question. Is asking a question wrong? I am trying to have an interaction with you. Or should I just talk at you? You chose to no answer it or the other question I asked, thats ok too. I will state this again. If someone grabbed any weapons platform in my possession without my authorization, they are a lethal threat and I would deal with them as such. If that means shooting them in the face or back of the head, so be it.

@alexrogers777 While I am not pro law enforcement shooting people at will, if you take my weapon I will kill you, for my own personal safety. This officer screwed up a lot of things on this stop. But shooting him when he did wasnt a mistake. He probably shouldnt be a cop. That said the victim/suspect did everything to make the situation the worst it could be. This easily could be another case of a cop getting offed by a person they stopped. As far as law goes, I can show you the law where when you are driving you are required to follow the law enforcement officers instruction during the stop. He failed to do that, thats why all of this happened. Regardless I feel bad for both the families involved with this.

@benparks3564 That may be true in those cases. But in this case we see the video, it was not. This man was keyed up before the officer even got out of his vehicle. At that point the officer should have deployed his taser and called for backup though.
