my grandmother and great grandmother bother worked. My grandmother worked before WWII and that was common for most working class. There is this misconception that working class women didnt have to work and thats just wrong. Statistically you had to be upper middle class to afford to have a stay at home wife/mom. What people back before WWII did have was extended family to help raise children while a woman went to work. Post WWII women lost some of that with the people moving around, but what they did gain were husbands with a temporary boost to income due to the rest of the globe being decimated from WWII. That ended when the boomers started entering the work force, because their age cohort was so large it depressed wages. This forced even middle class women, if they hoped to keep their living standard, to work.
