  1. I think a lot of people miss the original intent of these kinds of marriages. Life was short and brutal. A woman unattended was typically stolen. Wife raids were common, as there were in many places if you go back far enough. Even Rome was created on a wife raid, The Rape of the Sabine women. Many places are still as dangerous as back then. Most of these marriages are within the larger clan groups as well, so the people are known. Though I do not find them typically appealing, in these communities and cultures, these marriage arrangements may do more good than harm. But as a parent, I cannot fathom why a father would do this to one of his children unless the situation was dire in the extreme. But I am not from their culture. I do not speak their language. I do not think the same way.

  2. check out the Bulbul tarang, which is used in India and Pakistan and the Oud from Arabia. Muslims do indeed have banjo players.
