In reference to the creators being forced to do something they dislike, back during the Renaissance a sculptor, I think it was Michelangelo, was told by the commissioner of a piece that the nose on the statue was to large and that Mike should reduce it in size. Michelangelo knowing that from where the commissioner stood, they had the incorrect perspective of the piece from when it would be finished. But rather than argue with the man who paid the bills, Mike said yes. Grabbed his chisel and went to work. Tapping so gently that tiny grains of marble flaked off. The commissioner was please, leaving his own mark on the work. What he did not know is that Michelangelo had slyly hid in his hand that held the chisel, marble powder which he let poor from his hand with each tap of his hammer. Sometimes when you are an artist, you have to please your master. They too want to put their mark on the art. And why shouldnt they, they paid for it. But an artist should know how to defend their work. A smart man can do both at the same time.

  8. A lot of folks dont understand how games are funded. Microsoft doesnt open up their big Scrooge McDuck vault and hand studios money. It borrows money, like movie studios do, to finance games. The issue is over the last 15ish years, the interest rates have been damn near zero. That has all sort of distorting effects in markets. Since money was so cheap all sorts of studios that should never have existed, did. This is just a cleansing of things that never should have been. Because of the more expensive cost of money today, the industry is having to recalculate how they do their ROI on projects. This means a lot of studios, under the new business environment just are not going to survive. This is hitting all industries though, not just gaming. Its a repurposing of labor and capital. And it will be a long term good thing. It will eventually deliver a better product.

  11. I joined the Corps in the early 90s. On some domestic flights the airlines, specifically United and Alaskan, would tell me I couldnt fly in uniform. I was told if I wanted to fly I would have to take off my uniform so that the other people on the plane wouldnt feel threatened. On JAL flights, Korean Airlines, and on Emirates I not only was asked to board first in my uniform, they always upgraded me to first class. In the US, I would get called a baby killer often. And your father was correct, after 9/11 it completely changed.

  14. I had the same back surgery, lumbar fusion, that this man did. 3 surgeries. It does change you. I needed pain meds just to be civil. Then congress decided that because there are physicians that give it out like candy, that no physician should be able to so pretty much all physicians stopped with pain management. Most of these guys will be retiring soon. The union members wont care if they automate because they have their pension. They wont lay people off just automate as people leave. Had he existed in this time period perhaps much or all his music would have been purchased digitally and not on vinyl. What would have happened to said assets when he died? If its like other digital sellers, even accessing them with his passwords would be illegal under current user agreements. This is indeed about property rights. This goes for all the photos shared online as well, not just video games.

  34. l'm enough to remember when cable was ad free. Its why you paid for it. It paid for the service. If you have a paid service and you have to put ads in it you are not running your business right, you are charging to little or you are overly burdened by regulations or taxation.

You have to look at shop overhead. You dont know what those studios are spending money on, neither do I. As I stated, cheap money has allowed for all sorts of nonsense in many different fields. Is it possible that corporate overlords have favorites and are making choices based on that? Maybe. But do you think those kind of business choices will lead to long to long term success? The end result would be the same culling, which is really long overdue. My reasoning is sound. Its why I was able to retire at 45.

  37. The issue isnt it being reformed. Its the fact that each school district has a legion of "support personnel" that do nothing. Why does a elementary school need a lawyer or a diversity inclusion expert? All of these things take away resources from educators. And not to mention that most educators are piss poor because the ones with any sense get out as soon as possible. I know I did when California told me I couldnt teach history because it would hurt peoples feelings. Parents dont care enough to stand up to the school boards and politicians just want money to go where it will get them the most votes. Its why I home schooled my kids and they graduated 3 years early.

  46. There was a story that was required reading in the 80s and 90s in the US in junior high, Animal Farm. In that story, which was about communism, there was a horse. This horse, whose name was Boxer, was incredibly strong, loyal and believed he worked for the betterment of the whole farm. He would work harder than any animal. But eventually exhausted and worn down from the endless, and thankless, toil he was sent to the Knacker, to be made into glue so the pigs could have whiskey because Boxer was no longer "pulling his weight" on the farm. Thats whats happened to many men. And those left have seen it and will not let it happen to them. I am not really sure why more people cant see this. But Animal Farm isnt required reading in schools anymore. I wonder why?

Then there is their DEI hiring practices. You dont get the best in the industry that way. And maybe another reason is that back in 1997, not everyone was using CGI in everything. And so you have all the talent in the industry working on that one film where as today, they are spread to thin. Those things absolutely have an effect on quality.

They dont even need to bring him back, just go to the judge and let him know so he can lift the order allowing him to stay. Thats all.

I dont know how old you are either but most games use to come with massive books. Star Craft came with a lore book of something like 90 pages long. Same with War Craft. All these assets can be re leveraged to generate even more income, all while being tax free. Many of the uber wealthy do this with other assets than houses as well, like with stocks they own. But you only come to 36% inflation using the Feds more modern inflation calculator. But if you use the old method of inflation calculation, like they did back in the 80s, you come to about 72% total inflation over that same period. You can look at vehicle prices the same way. In 2016 I bought a Ford F 150 for 38k. That same vehicle today would cost almost 60k. We are just seeing the devaluation of the US dollar. That said, an algorithm using data that people couldnt use without colluding with each other should be against the law. It gives those people who use it, an unfair market advantage. The job of the government isnt to pick winners and losers, its to make sure the market is fair and impartial.

  137. I have never had a hard time dating. face wise I am not attractive. I am tall, 6'7" but from women's preferences thats similar to being 5'10", im to tall. Most are starved for a kind word or even a genuine smile. But I think one of the bigger things is that so many people, both men and women, are undatable today. Right off the top, 70% of people in the US are either overweight or obese. Right there those folks are disqualified. But those same 70% will want someone who is "perfect" without understanding their shortcomings or more importantly, improving themselves. Then you add things like politics, religion or lack there of, and simple physical attraction, pretty soon you find you are hunting for the 1%. But what really stuns me, is even at the age of 30, most women arent looking to get married. They arent dating seriously, they are still in fun mode. That is really what has changed. Ill ask them, do you want a family or get married and they all parrot the same thing, im still young. I am happy and having fun. I still dont know what I want yet. These same womens great grandmothers knew what they wanted when they were 18. I think we have infantilized a lot of people. The are adults in body only. They think they can have healthy children well into their 40s with no threat to their physical health. And these are supposedly college educated and smart women.

  195. You are right about viewership. Both of my sons have left the house, 18 and 21, neither watches TV. Its all online stuff. Just recently got my mom to finally cut the cable. She still watches stuff via Roku. But if my 80 year old mother is changing, so are a lot of other younger folks. I cant remember the last time I watched cable TV, maybe Sharknado 3? How long ago was that? The internet allows for niche content. Something that just doesnt work at scale for cable. Its why everything on TV is the same. They need every single person they can get to watch. And in doing so sterilize anything they produce.

  196. Many of us are opposed to intervention because we know nothing will come from it. Congress, since WWII, has only allowed half measures. I lost a lot of friends during the GWOT. I spent a lot of time away from home. I dont want that for the young bucks in the military today. Fighting low intensity wars, politicized at home, with no resolution planned or wanted. Its just a waste of blood and treasure. Now if we were going to go in there and just "de revolutionize" that country and return sanity to Persia, I think we might be able to get buy in from the other local nations. But the US should not take the lead.

  200. That guy is a moron. The US didnt want to be the "hall monitor" of the world. It cobbled together a global alliance using trade as the carrot to contain the Soviet Union. And it worked beautifully. The problem started during the Clinton years. The Soviet Union was gone. The US should have dropped the alliance but there were to many vested interests world wide. Now, over 30 years later, we are still trying to fight against the international order. And these same people blame the US for it. Its why when Trump says something like, no more money for Ukraine, thats a Europe problem, people in Europe scream. Its just vestetd interests. But, largely speaking, the US public, wants nothing to do with it.

  210.  @atys  that assumes the company pays a dividend. Most dont. Many times this is done so that higher up executives reach targets in their contracts that grant them bonuses. But long term this always damages companies. If a company has enough money that they can buy back stock, they arent paying enough dividend (if they pay out dividends) or they are not properly managing their pricing structure. Lower prices will grow your market share. But they dont care about this. They care about the next quarters profit, nothing else.

  211. Young Germans, especially males are highly radicalized. I dont mean that in a bad way. They, like the men in many western nations, have been demonized so long they no longer care. This is a generational problem and its natural reaction. The thing Germany is worried about is that the Nazis themselves were a backlash to the roving bands of communists who terrorized cities and the feckless Weimar government who did nothing. And the other main form of preservative, salt, was deemed hazardous to peoples health in the 80s. Then with the diet crazy they wanted fat removed from everything so it tastes like crap.   235. Back in the day you could make a game, by yourself, photocopy a black and white manual, and put it in a zip lock baggy and sell it at hobby shops. This was back in the early and mid 80s though for computers. If you didnt know dos though, which most people didnt, you really couldnt even access computer gaming at that time. If anything consoles slowed down adult content via video games by gatekeeping content that they wanted to publish and directed it at children. But most of that content was meant for children.
