Since the dept of education was created, education levels have dropped and so standards have dropped to maintain graduation rates. Its a failure. Schools should be controlled at the local level by school districts. Much of what the Dept of Education did was social engineering. That said its budget is a rounding error in the vast sum that the Federal government spends.
