  1. People conflate Chivalry with French Romance era court culture. The two are not even related except that during that period men of high status were required to abide by both sets of rules, one on the battlefield, the other while at court. The code of Chivalry was a system that granted rights and privileges to those under the code. So if you were a knight and were fighting another knight on a field, you could yield, then the victorious night had the right to all your possessions on the field, but your family had the right to secure your life via ransom. It was looked down upon and many knights lost social standings and titles for outright killing other knights who yielded. The code was an attempt to control the endemic warfare that existed at the time. And it did NOT extend to common men, women or even children.
