  1. With mortgages you can shelter income with the tax write offs, so its not always bad. From 27 to 45 I literally paid zero in Federal Income taxes because of it. That said a 30 year mortgage is the best kind. You can choose how much more over it you pay every month. Best two ways is making bi monthly payments, it reduces the interest a lot during the month. But also simple paying an extra or 13th month per year will take off a lot of time on that mortgage as well as interest.
