You're avoiding the obvious reason why mass shootings have hugely increased over the decades... they didn't have semi-auto rifles available to consumers in the 50's. As the ability to shoot more bullets in a short period of time increases, the numbers of murders that qualify for "mass shooting" goes WAY up. The tech has changed. In the 50's, if you wanted to write to someone, you had to physically write a letter, put a stamp on it, mail it, wait 4 days for it to arrive. Nowadays, you can type something, hit Return, and the whole world sees it. That sea change applies to all sorts of things, including guns.
