  1.  @sgshaday  What’s changed is now people get butthurt when they see characters of color. If Empire Strikes Back had come out today, it would be boycotted by Republicans because Lando was added (specifically to put a black character into Star Wars). Audiences in 1980 said “Cool!”. Today it’d be “they added a WOKE character!! White Genocide!!1!”

  4.  @sgshaday  Lando was a “token”. He was put in because Lucas took a lot of heat for not having any black characters in Star Wars. And nobody cared, because no one freaked out about adding diversity back then. It’s great you brought up the Satanic Panic… another idiotic fear-based sales job to Republicans. The panic has changed, but it’s the same old grift: The War on Christmas!! Transgender Story Hour!! Critical Race Theory! Woke Entertainment is Indoctrinating Your Kids!! And yes, this theme of “cultural debasement” is sold to every new generation of Republicans, by Republican media. Now, lefties are sold fear about Climate Change, and Abortion (though that might become very real, very soon, pending the Supreme Court ruling). But the “Culture War” histrionics are almost always sold to Republicans, and why not, it’s a consistent moneymaker. If Empire came out today, you’d have Candace Owens attacking it as racist, then would come the ratioing campaign for IMBD and RottenTomatoes, blah blah, you know the routine. If the characters were the issue, their race (or gender) wouldn’t be mentioned in the critique. But that doesn’t get clicks. Racial animus and “Get Woke, Go Broke” DO get clicks, so that’s what’s promoted.

  5.  @sgshaday  I would submit that you may not be as versed in online right-wing spheres. The whole "Get Woke, Go Broke" movement is almost exclusively Trump supporters. It's part of the (admittedly brilliant) sales pitch by MAGA/RNC to say that "white people are the oppressed ones". "Get Woke, Go Broke" is the leading cultural spear in that effort. I have yet to see any non-Trump supporters buy into that whole victimology narrative, but I suppose they exist somewhere. Of course there are non-MAGAs who get frustrated with "diverse" characters if they're not written well, but time and again we see the MAGAs "ratio" movies (downvoting on review sites) before they're even released, just because they have a female lead. It happens constantly on this channel, a new movie coming out soon, is led by female characters, or a non-white actor, and every MAGA Culture Warrior decries it sight-unseen, and posts gleeful videos if the movie fails at the box office. It's a Culture War thing, and the specific "anti-wokeness" element is pure Republican. That's not even debated by Republicans, it's an open effort.
