  9. Many people today look at projects like this as a waste. You have to see them through the eyes of the people at the time. An open conflict with the Soviet Union was considered almost inevitable. It was just a question of when, and what would be the trigger.

  18. When you are used to paying 25¢-30¢ per gallon, it is a shock. Also, this didn't happen over a year or so. In some areas the price went up 5-6 cents each day. The US was in a recession, while prices were going up without a corresponding increase in wages.

  19. Julie Stevens Dr Coop was brilliant in not only his knowledge of science and public health, but as a showman. He made himself the face and voice of DHHS, much like J Edger Hoover was the FBI. It was no longer just another Washington alphabet agency. He knew people listened to people, not generic government advice. When he released the first official HIV study, he had it printed on the most expensive looking stock available. His goal was to make it look like a cross between a Bible and a royal decree. The more important it looked, the more likely people would take it seriously. The bright cover also made it stand out. So Congresspeople would see reporters carrying it, and assume they needed to do something now. None of this takes away from his skills, it shows he truly understood how Washington works.

  22. Not a problem. Locally I live in the county of Alachua. There is also a nearby town called Alachua. Same spelling, different pronunciation. A few other areas also seem to have unique pronunciations. It's a way of figuring out whether or not someone is local, or new in the area.

  23.  @johnabuick  In processing and forging iron ore into steel small amounts of radioactive dust accumulate in the metal. If you start with something that is already steel and only needs to be treated to make into the final needed form much less is added. There are newer forms of creating steel that are less likely to introduce outside impurities that are more commonly used to make sensitive equipment today. But it is much more expensive than regular metal alloys.

  24. The execs at CBS insisted the show open with a warning/apology to the viewers for what they were about to watch. I think they greatly underestimated the ability of the average viewer to understand the show. Yes, there were things said that were offensive, even by the standards of the time. But somehow people were still adult enough to understand that the person saying them was a fictional character and there was no need to freak out and demand the show be taken off the air. It was a comedy, not news or the opinion of CBS or any staff.

  31. Probably from mockup or prop guns being converted. It is possible, but what you end up with is really just a more professional looking zip gun that will soon fail. Some starter pistols (Not a toy, but also not considered a "real" gun) can be bored out and made to fire live ammo. But, again, the end result is both illegal and dangerous. Changes in design have made this less likely with newer models.

  38. The Malaise Era is hard for people to understand today. Watch some of the old Motorweek reviews on YouTube and you'll see them get excited because a 350 (5.7L) is up to 160 HP. 20 more than the previous year. My first car was a '77 AMC Hornet, later replaced with an '82 Olds Omega. Ended up giving away both. Those cars brought me and my friends to some great places, but neither were great cars.

  39. ​ @mar4kl  The salesman who talked my mother into the extended warranty for our '82 Aries K wagon must have been so proud when he closed the sale. The service department would probably burn an effigy of him a few years later. One transmission, three sets of CV joints, and a mystery stalling that took several trips into the shop to finally figure out that the car hated ethenol (Gasohol as it was called at the time) mixed with gasoline and a cooling fan that was designed to run for a few seconds after shutting off, but instead ran until the battery died. She eventually dumped it in favor of a Nova (Corolla).

  46.  @TheHistoryGuyChannel  Regardless of whether it went well, or was a disaster, history (at least US history) would have changed radically. The Cuban revolution had not taken place yet. And this would have been a signal that the US would be willing to use force to support allies in the hemisphere, and destroy perceived threats. Even though we weren't big fans of the Cuban government, once the precedent is set, it would have been fairly easy to justify using American troops to end Castro's fight before it really began. Also possibly convincing the old leadership to step aside and live in retirement in exchange for this aid. No Castro, no Cuban Missile Crisis. We also were not yet openly involved in Vietnam. It would have been easy enough to say "Sorry, busy in our own back yard." So no, or at least a very different Vietnam War.

  49. Civilian rationing in the Soviet Union during the war was brutal. The amounts were almost at starvation level, and it assumes even that was available. When you add in adulteration of foods it gets worse. A large amount of sawdust and stalk trimmings were added to bread to stretch grain supplies, and sausage was best described as "Be happy you have something, don't ask what it is".
