  2. Except the more people that are talking, the greater likelihood that the enemy will hear you. The ships were probably under radio silence while maneuvering though the mines. With a limited area to move they didn't want the RAF to find them. There's a story about Soviet defenses going to a higher state of alert because of a sudden jump in NATO military transmissions. It was the sort of thing to be expected right before an invasion. It turned out to be just a bunch of soldiers and sailors from different countries shit talking each other about the World Cup matches.
