When I got divorced the biggest mental gut punch was "I settled for you." Learning that everything I did for her, everything I told her was futile. Everything she told me was a lie. She was only with me until she was ready to "upgrade". To make it worse she said it so casually, like something that should have been obvious from the beginning. Hearing that from someone I truly loved screwed with my head, triggering years of depression crashes, and all the fun that comes with it until I finally got therapy.

It never fails to amaze me how so many women can have these completely opposite views of reality at the same time. Men are told to be careful about what they say to and about women. How various microaggression terms can have long term damage. Yet they, with absolutely no effort, can tell guys stuff that truly cuts to the soul. They'll say things that leave wounds that don't heal, only cover with a scar. And they never need to consider the consequences.
