  5. A few months ago I used self checkout at Walmart. The jeans I bought rang up as $3. I double checked and that's what the screen said they were. When finished the paper receipt said the same thing. I dropped my stuff off at my car and went back in and bought 6 more. A human cashier might have caught it the first time, definitely when I went back. But if they're going to make me do do the checkout, it's their responsibility to have the right codes in the computer.

  14. In the woods near my place there's a homeless camp. After sunset you can see them trickling in. Lately they've begun sleeping behind nearby businesses. Tonight, while walking my dog I saw two tents were set up along the sidewalk. It's expanding. Unfortunately our city council has probably proclaimed us the Berkeley of the East. So I can assume more will be moving in, and eventually there will be the usual suspects passing out more tents as the weather gets cooler. If you see something similar near where you live do what you can to stop it early. Like rust or mold, these groups only expand, never contract.

  15. In the early 2000's had finally cleared my credit card debt (My fault), and was being bombarded with loan offers. I could understand credit card companies wanting me to sign up, I paid my debts with huge extra interest (eventually). But the real estate loan offers were ridiculous. $500K for a cook at Cracker Barrel? Who in their right mind makes that kind of offer? Unfortunately a lot of people did take the offer. In a couple of years they were walking away from homes they could never afford. Of course, the banks put on their best shocked look when it all blew up.

This happened in Detroit (I believe) when they refused some HUD and other federal grants because they would come with an audit and there was no way they were going to open their books.

  27. If I had units available in Portland I'd consider it if: 1) 72 hour eviction notice. No more of this 6 months without rent and you still can't even begin proceedings against a tenant. 2) The city assumes ALL liability. If other renters come after me with a lawsuit tied to one of the homeless I let in, I point them at the city and their checkbook. This includes fixing the place up for the next person I rent to. 3) Rules. If I, as the landlord, say no loud noises after 9 PM or no drugs for example, I can kick them out.

We have a division of the Governor's office who's sole purpose is to poach companies from other states. They have a counterpart in Texas. Both have been very successful over the past decade.

  31. My car was broken into over the weekend. Nothing was taken, just the middle console and glove box opened and a stuff scattered. I didn't bother to report it to the police, they really don't care about minor theft anymore. I told a few neighbors and the property manager so others in my complex could be warned. The YMCA excuse of recording over sounds like Sgt Shultz "Nothing! I see nothing." That may have worked 30 years ago when cameras recorded to VHS tapes that were regularly recycled. But who uses that today? Where i work every camera is digital and uploads nightly. If necessary I could call up video from a year ago.

It was only a few years ago one of the states got rid of the law requiring motor vehicles be proceeded by a person with a lamp at night. Despite the invention of headlights, no one bothered to take it off the books. Squatting made sense when we were a more agrarian based society and homesteading was still a thing. There was a resurgence during the Great Depression when thousands of farms, homes, and businesses were abandoned. Eventually states figured out that they could seize abandoned property for non payment of taxes and sell them off so squatting dropped off.

But the overall rate was also curving down, so how much it was influenced by is questionable. I helped with a needle exchange program for a short time in the '80s. The differences between then and now were that we were privately, not taxpayer, funded. Also we gave only one or two more kits out then a person turned in. We didn't pass them out by the box to anyone who walked up.

  40. Remember when NYC decided to house the homeless in hotels that didn't normally take them (In more upscale neighborhoods) because of the Coof. The locals, who probably supported every taxpayer funded housing project were absolutely shocked by the behavior. Nimbyism kicked into overdrive. They demanded the new neighbors be moved out. They claimed it was because they needed to be closer to the various "support facilities" that many of the addicts and street crazies used. You know, for their own good.   41. Several years ago someone pointed out that in NYC if they had just given every person "helped" by one of the housing programs $100K in cash it would have cost less. Of course if you gave them a check for that much, many would have blown it within a month and ended up right back where they started. But at least the city could say "We tried. But that, I'm sure, has nothing to do with decriminalizing all other drugs. 4) Absolutely none of this came as a surprise to anyone who can put three brain cells together. Unfortunately the west coast states screwing things up so bad has set the marijuana legalization attempts back for everywhere else. A few years back there was a reasonably sane system proposed here in Florida. It was based similar to alcohol laws. License wholesale production, growers. Separate license for sale to public, limited to X number per county. Small amounts (5-6 plants I think) could be grown for personal use. Local municipal laws could control if and where public sales were allowed. Increased penalties for sale of alcohol or any drugs to minors. Rules against using by employers or as a condition of probation would still remain in effect. Now, after looking at San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, etc there's a big pushback against legalization. As an addendum, I don't smoke pot, haven't for many years. I just think making something that I can easily grow in my yard illegal is silly.

But this is Chicago. (Chicago area) The last time they elected a Republican was 1927. We are approaching a century of uniparty control. Chicago, and NE Illinois, is a political machine. If you take care of the machine, the machine will take care of you. Springfield claims to be the capital of Illinois, but the state is completely run by Chicago.

I spent two years trying to convince I was a cook in Florida and not also commuting to Arkansas to work at a meat processing plant full time. Someone had used my information to get a job. With the IRS you are guilty until proven innocent. When I finally got a meeting with a human representative it only started my appeal. It is a huge bureaucracy and moves very slowly. I had to repeatedly resubmit proof that I was me and I hadn't been 2,000 miles away, three years previously.

He may have previously had a sample on record from another source. When DNA tracing became more widespread a lot of parents submitted samples from their children in case they went missing. Many, probably most, realize they need to quit but have a thousand excuses why they won't. When dealing with an addict you are dealing with someone who's brain has been altered. Not just when they are high, all the time. It's not an exact parallel but it's like talking to an insane person. They just don't see the world the same way you do, or like they used to. Depending on how long they've been using most can be brought back. But some are too far gone. Even when they get clean they've fried so much of their brain that they are effectively mentally disabled.

It took two years to convince the IRS that I was really me, and I'd never been to Arkansas. As a side note. The IRS is three years behind on reviewing tax files. First your information goes to Social Security. Then, after about 18 months it goes to the IRS. They also take about 18 months to actually look at it. This is how so many people get away with identity theft and fraud when it comes to using someone else's ID. Just have a new job every few years.

  139. My father wanted to rent a few elephants for our home. The city made him get rid of our chickens when the people in a subdivision built next to our property complained. It turned out to be the peacocks who lived in the woods behind our place. Because the town was a bird sanctuary, no one was allowed to do anything about the peacocks. My dad's rationale was elephants weren't "farm animals", so totally legal under the law. Also significantly louder than any chicken.

  151. There is a large overlap population too. Mental health services generally won't deal with people who are on illegal drugs. Drug treatment centers won't touch the crazies. A lot of these people are self medicating (Almost never a good idea) so you end up with a schizophrenic (A condition that can be controlled with the right meds) who takes something he bought on the corner to try and deal with his symptoms. Unfortunately dealing with such a person takes a fair amount of time and money. It also usually takes forced institutionalization, which is very hard to get.

  156. Similar situation with Wells Fargo. My ATM card was duplicated by a skimmer. The people who used it bought stuff at a higher end department store, ordered vintage basketball shoes, and pizza. So, the police have camera footage and an address. They seemed almost annoyed that I went to the station to file a report (something my bank said to do). I never heard back from them.
