  7. Horizontal identification is a relatively new concept. It wasn't until after WWII that the French determined who was French and who was German, just living in France. In Spain today, many people still identify as Basque, not Spanish. In the US most citizens identified as belonging to a state, not a nation until the Civil War. This doesn't even include the dozens of unrecognized nations created by drawing arbitrary lines on maps by foreign powers. Maps of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia would look much different if locals had drawn them. Not that they always agree either. Unfortunately it usually takes a lot of people shooting a lot of other people before the idea catches on.

  8. At night you could also scan up and down the AM frequencies on radio. Range and locations would change. But from Florida I could pick up stations in Ohio and New York. This is also how I learned that at 4 AM every third station was broadcasting Art Bell.

They have no responsibility for the craptastic state of the city? Which is the accepted excuse, incompetence or corruption? They've tried every other one. Trying to put someone else in charge won't make it paradise, but it can't make it much worse.

  19. ​ @seanmccann8368  The British were smart enough to put a leash on most of the more imperialist members of the government and military. I think they knew (Though didn't want to admit) the age of traditional empires was finally over, and were willing to deal with it. But they were also insistent on dismantling the empire on their terms and timeline. Unfortunately these were usually in conflict with the local's plans. Like the question "Why did the Germans keep fighting after (pick a date)?", most clear thinking people in the government could run the numbers and realize it was over. But the alternative, England without an empire, was unthinkable.
