  3. ​ @seanmccann8368  The British were smart enough to put a leash on most of the more imperialist members of the government and military. I think they knew (Though didn't want to admit) the age of traditional empires was finally over, and were willing to deal with it. But they were also insistent on dismantling the empire on their terms and timeline. Unfortunately these were usually in conflict with the local's plans. Like the question "Why did the Germans keep fighting after (pick a date)?", most clear thinking people in the government could run the numbers and realize it was over. But the alternative, England without an empire, was unthinkable.
