  1. If you look at the successful ones they usually follow a pattern. Students are given rules. They will follow those rules. You will be on time. You will be appropriately dressed, usually a uniform or strict dress code. Work will be done. Minimal academic standards would be above the average of surrounding schools. Additional work will be assigned for home. It will be completed on time. Disruptive behavior will face consequences. Engaging in criminal or antisocial activity outside of school will face discipline in school. Failure to follow the rules will result in expulsion. Essentially they went back to the style of parochial or military schools of the 1970's and 80's. In an interview with one of the principals he explained that he was a in the Marine Corp. If someone had told him, at 17, what was going to be expected of him he would have walked away because it couldn't be done. Yet he did it. His philosophy was that people will do what is required. If you let them slide by on bare minimum, they'll do and become accustomed to bare minimum. But if you push them, if you remind them that today was hard but it was just preparation for tomorrow, which will be harder. They will excell. They will come to expect excellence from themselves and the people around them.
