  4.  @54356776  Roddenberry, like Serling with The Twilight Zone, believed science fiction could be used as a modern morality play. But they at least understood subtlety and the message was woven into the story. There were also shades of grey. To many shows today are 100% about the message. Story, characters, the possibility of an alternative view or motivations be damned. It's presented with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face.

  7. Voyager always seemed schizophrenic to me. I believe they had different writers during the course of the show and each new group had something else they wanted to try. But if you have something, for example, in season 1 that you plan on being relevant during the second half of season 2, but have switched development teams it gets confusing. There are several episodes that justifiably get dumped on, but I'll give the series an overall B. It's sad that Voyager and Enterprise are held up as "When Star Trek was good". It's fallen so far since then.

  8.  @emorsi  I haven't seen the new Handmaiden's Tale. For me it's like getting alcohol poisoning and never being able to tolerate even the smell of a particular liquor again. I had to read it for an English Comp class. The instructor was not amused when I referred to it as feminist answer to The Turner Diaries. The movie stripped some of the few tolerable bits and doubled down on "Men Evil, doubly so if religious" themes.

  9. To cover the Drinker's criticism of the movie trying to cover all the bases and not quite doing it. 1) It's a straight to stream film, make it in two (90 minute?) parts. 2) Only two people. A small 2-3 person team on either side. Take it down to two people after the things below come up and reduce it to one survivor on each side. 3) General criticism of many films today. Figure out what to do with CGI effects before starting. Somehow it's gotten less expensive to use, the technology has improved, yet the quality has dropped in the last decade. Studios using it seem to farm out the effects to the lowest bidder, who then dump the project on a few interns after cashing the check.

  14.  @EvilDoresh  Roddenberry, and many of the early writers came out of military service. They saw the Enterprise, and Star Fleet in general, being run similar to a navy. Yes it was civilian controlled, but each starship has the firepower two wreck a planet. No one is going to call out the Captain or any senior officers with a lot of backlash. Doubly so over "feelings" without a large amount of evidence to back them up. Insubordination was used as an occasional character trait in the original series, but with the understanding that they were risking their careers when they did it. There was also an out presented at some point to explain why the entire officer staff hadn't been broken up and reassigned. As an example see the episode when Spock got horny and redirected the Enterprise to Vulcan.

  16. I knew it wouldn't be high art, or redefine contemporary story telling. All I asked was to not f*ck it up. This they seem to have done. There are errors in lore, but nothing earth shattering. I could nitpick a few scenes, but I'll leave that to the Uber Fans who demanded FO New Vegas be redone scene for scene. Anything less they were going to hate.

  18. Could it be that the people who don't welcome Romulins are the ones who remember that they considered other species, and humans in particular, as unworthy. They thought humans should be killed until there were just enough to maintain a slave population. They held this view for generations, if not centuries. Now they just flip a switch and are not only willing to coexist, but accept a subservient role. I understand retconing and the occasional need to try a work around established history. But this is like giving dogs wings and lasers, and putting them in a world with dinosaurs.

  20. When I saw the trailer I thought maybe Trinity was back because a lot of it took place in Neo's head. Nope, they literally brought her back from the dead. I can suspend belief and allow small plot jumps. But not that, I'm going to skip and let my brain believe it ended years ago.

  23. That's really all I ask for, but they often can't even reach that basic level. If I go into a movie with the expectation of shutting off my brain and looking at the pretty colors I don't expect high art. Unfortunately too many have been so bad I can't even do that.

  25. A cast that doesn't like each other. A director that doesn't really know what he's doing. Technical issues that cause rewrites, often immediately before filming. It can get you a masterpiece like Jaws (or Apocalypse Now), or a disaster like Men in Black III.

  30. Why is it the same people who tell us if we don't like what a social media platform is doing to go out and make our own can't make their own fiction? Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Tolkien, etc, etc. They feel the need to usurp and destroy everything good about my childhood and to ensure no future children will ever be able to enjoy them.
