  1. As he mentioned in the closing comments, many of the British commanders were gentlemen first, officers second. A lot of this likely came from being colonial commanders. Fighting the "fuzzy wuzzies" (Churchill's term) is much different than fighting a modern army led by people using a European military doctrine. Eventually they would adapt, but not until the loss of thousands of men.
