  1. In their defense, they didn't know how deep in British territory they were at that point. Or where friendly troops were. Probably just chose to go with the plan that was working at the time.

  2. Weather has been mentioned a few times, but were both air forces that limited? Did commanders on either side not understand how to use air support? I realize I'm seeing this through modern eyes, but even a generation later, I can't see the Generals wanting to take even a first step without air cover.
