  2. Possibly educated women who saw an opportunity to get off the collective farm. They would likely offer top of the line prenatal health care, food, and housing while the women wouldn't be expected to work during the time of the experiment. The women had to wait around and to get knocked up by chimp DNA (impossible) from an orangutan (double impossible). And when it failed (100% chance), start the process all over. Outside of the ick factor it sounds like an extended vacation by USSR standards.
