  1. The verbal nonresponse is a sign of a sociopath trying to come up with the appropriate thing to say. Think of the scene from Terminator when Arnold is scrolling through potential responses to the landlord banging on the door. They know what they want to say, but have learned that can have negative results. So they try to come up with "What would a normal person say?" I'm not saying she is one, there are other excuses for the habit, but I wouldn't be shocked if she were.
