See, most people, if they get in a such situation — a whirlpool trying to pull them down while they are low on oxygen, try to apply force and swim up, following their instinct. However it only makes them spend their oxygen faster. What is better to do is to actually swim downward to the bottom, where whirlpool ends. Then on the bottom, where the current is weaker and there's no downward force, swim to the side and only them ascend to the surface. But most people don't know this, and a lot of those who do tend to panic and forget about it. So it's possible that this is what happenned to him and caused him his life.
