  1. First of all, numeracy did matter, at least in case of republicans. We clearly see that when republicans were presented with uncomfortable data the percentage of correct answers initially went down, but then sharply climbed up. Second of all, one guy actually said what concerns might be: smart people will likely challenge the uncomfortable data to find inconsistencies in it(or manipulations of definitions). And thirdly, it might not be that bad. The problem is that both sides will only present and distribute data that supports their viewpoint(even if they have data that proves the other point), and to correct for that, it's reasonable to give evidence from your opponents extra scrutiny
